Behind the numbers

A Look At December Online Retail Sales

19 Feb 2018

The BNZ Online Retail Sales report released in January showed provisional December figures as being up on last year, although growth has slowed down. Total online retail spend was up 6% year-on-year, 7% for local retailers and only 4% for international retail sites. In Australia, NAB just released their cashless retail sales from December, which reported year-on-year growth of 8.7%.

Food, housewares & hardware, and electronics at local New Zealand retailers experienced double digit growth between 10 – 14%. Daily sales, pharmacies, cosmetics and stationary were amongst the categories hit the hardest with negative growth rates. In Australia, Clothing & footwear sales were up a small 2.9% and department store sales were negative.

For Solutionists clients in New Zealand, 2017 was another strong year. The average year-on-year online sales growth was 25% and clients in Australia experienced more than double that with an average year-on-year growth of 52%. Focus for the year remained on conversion rate optimisation, site speed, automation, personalisation as well as integration of new payment solutions such as AfterPay and Laybuy to improve the customer experience.

Looking ahead to 2018, the growth for Solutionists clients will no doubt continue. With ongoing focus on building an exceptional customer experience, full of personalised content and best practice functionality, the end user remains in the forefront.
